How to Care for Portuguese Leather - A Complete Guide
Leather that lasts starts with proper care.
At LGDO, we design leather goods to last decades - not seasons. But longevity isn't just about construction. It's about care.
This guide covers everything you need to know about maintaining your Portuguese leather accessories, from daily routines to deep conditioning.
Understanding Your Leather
All LGDO products are crafted from premium full-grain leather sourced from LWG-certified tanneries in Portugal. This is the highest quality leather available - it retains the natural grain, develops a rich patina over time, and becomes more beautiful with age.
What makes it different:
- Natural surface with visible pores and texture
- Breathable and durable
- Develops unique character through use
- Requires minimal treatment
Daily Care - What You Should Do
1. Keep It Dry
Leather is naturally water-resistant, but not waterproof. If your LGDO piece gets wet:
- Wipe excess water immediately with a soft, dry cloth
- Let it air dry naturally at room temperature
- Never use heat sources (hairdryers, radiators, direct sunlight)
- Stuff bags and pouches with paper to maintain shape while drying
2. Handle With Clean Hands
Natural oils from your hands will condition the leather over time - this is normal and desirable. However, avoid handling with:
- Lotions or creams on your hands
- Dirty or greasy hands
- Hands with harsh chemicals
3. Store Properly
When not in use:
- Store in a cool, dry place with good air circulation
- Avoid plastic bags (leather needs to breathe)
- Use the dust bag provided (if applicable)
- Keep away from direct heat and sunlight
- Don't stack heavy items on top
Monthly Maintenance
Cleaning
For regular dirt and dust:
- Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the surface
- For stubborn marks, use a slightly damp cloth
- Wipe in circular motions, following the grain
- Let air dry completely
For stains:
- Act quickly - fresh stains are easier to remove
- Blot (don't rub) with a clean, dry cloth
- For oil-based stains, sprinkle cornstarch and leave overnight
- For water stains, dampen the entire area evenly and let dry
Conditioning (Every 3-6 Months)
Leather conditioning prevents drying and cracking. Here's how:
- Choose the right product: Use a natural leather conditioner or cream. Avoid products with silicone or petroleum.
- Test first: Apply a small amount to an inconspicuous area and wait 24 hours.
- Apply sparingly: Less is more. Use a soft cloth to apply a thin, even layer.
- Massage gently: Work the conditioner into the leather using circular motions.
- Let it absorb: Leave for 20-30 minutes.
- Buff: Remove excess with a clean, dry cloth.
Note: LGDO leather is treated during production. Over-conditioning can damage the finish. When in doubt, condition less frequently.
What to Avoid
Never use:
- Household cleaners or detergents
- Alcohol-based products
- Baby wipes or makeup removers
- Shoe polish (unless specifically for leather goods)
- Harsh brushes or abrasive materials
Avoid exposure to:
- Direct sunlight for extended periods
- Extreme temperatures
- Humid environments (bathrooms, basements)
- Sharp objects that can scratch
Embracing the Patina
One of the most beautiful aspects of quality leather is its patina - the natural darkening and character that develops over time.
This isn't damage. It's evolution.
Your LGDO piece will:
- Darken slightly with age
- Develop subtle variations in color
- Show marks from daily use
- Become softer and more supple
These changes are signs of authentic, full-grain leather. They make your piece uniquely yours.

When Professional Help Is Needed
While most care can be done at home, seek professional leather restoration for:
- Deep scratches or cuts
- Severe water damage
- Mold or mildew
- Color transfer from denim or other fabrics
- Structural repairs (broken zippers, torn stitching)
The LGDO Approach to Longevity
We don't design products to be sustainable.
We design them to last.
Proper care is part of that commitment. When you invest in quality leather goods, you're choosing objects that can serve you for decades - reducing waste, replacement, and environmental impact.
